Kanishka was a king of the Kushan
Empire in Central Asia. He was a
patron of Indian art and literature.
He is regarded as a contemporary
of Ashoka. He was great carrier of
Indian thought and culture to
Central Asia and other parts of the
world He constructed many
Buddhist monasteries and
preserved the relics of the past. At
Purushapura, the capital of the
Kushana Empire, Kanishka built
a stupendous Relic Tower and a
Buddhist monastery next to the
tower.By erecting Buddhist
monuments in at different
places of his empire, Kanishka
tried to grab the attention and
devotion of the people towards
Buddhism.
