Kesavan, the temple elephant, would wake up everyday with a prod from its mahout. He would then walk to the village pond for its ritual bath. The mahout washed and scrubbed him thoroughly. After the bath, Kesavan would walk back to the shed with its mahout. It would then feast on a breakfast of sugarcane, jaggery and fruits. This was followed by the mahout decorating it for the temple by applying vibhuti and sandal paste on its forehead and trunk. Lastly, Kesavan would kneel down to allow the mahout to throw a cloth over it and place a mount on its back.
