TheKhilafat movement(19191924) was apan-Islamic, political protest campaign launched by Muslims inBritish Indiato influence the British government and to protect theOttoman Empireduring theaftermathofWorld War I. It won the support ofMahatma Gandhiand the predominantly Hindu Congress movement because of its anti-British overtones. In India, although mainly a Muslim religious movement, the movement became a part of the widerIndian independence movement. The movement was a topic inConference of London (February 1920); however, Arabs saw it as threat of continuation of Turkish dominance of Arab lands.
Gandhi ji supported the Khilafat movement because he thought if he stood by the Indian Muslims and their concerns, then Muslims would appreciate it and will themselves reciprocate by sidelining their inherent exclusivity intolerance of Hindus. That was a logical and honest thinking by Gandhi ji. Khilafat movement had nothing to do with India.
