In December 1929 , the Congress session was held at Lahore with Jawaharlal Nehru as the President in which, the Congress declared the attainment of complete Independence or Purna Swaraj as its aim and decided to launch a civil disobedience movement under the leadership of Gandhiji.

At the Calcutta session in 1928, the Congress passed a resolution demanding dominion status. The resolution declared purna Swaraj or complete independence as the goal of the Congress.
It was decided that 26 January would be observed as the Purna Swaraj day or independence day every year.
