Mahalwari system, one of the three main revenue systems of land tenure in British India, the other two being the zamindar (landlord) and the ryotwari (individual cultivator). The word mahalwari is derived from the Hindi mahal, meaning a house or, by extension, a district.
The Impact: The new revenue system introduced by the English affected the socio-economic structure of the Indian society in various ways. First, recognition of the individual ownership on land created two types of land-owning classes, namely, the zamindars and the peasant-proprietors.
