Mahatma Gandhi thought that "swaraj" wouldn't come to India if the dalits were not freed from the status as untouchables. He called dalits as harijans and he even cleaned the toilets to dignify the works of a bhangi. He also organized different satyagrahas for them to ensure their entry into temples, schools, public baths , tanks, etc.He tried to pursue to upper caste Hindus to treat the dalits with respect and change their hearts and attitude towards them.
