French colonisers did not only aim for economic exploitation of the colonies. Their mission was also driven by the idea of civilizing the natives.
The French believed that it should civilize the natives in order to fulfill their duty, which is what any advanced European country would do. Even if it meant the destruction of religious practices, traditions or local cultures.
Also, For your knowledge, Kipling used to call this “White man’s burden” which clearly means they felt it was a duty of these advanced countries to civilize the poor and the backwards.

Actually french thought being a part of european advanced country it is their duty to civilise the natives. so yeah, this was the actual reason. u can always elaborate :)
