It was mainly an imperial disguise, by French, which allowed them to control the colonies. Just as the British had done in India. The French in Vietnam claimed that they would introduced modern and civilised way of living to the people. The French mainly considered that like the European, it was their responsibility to civilise the colonies even if this meant destruction of local culture, religion and traditions. Education was seen as one of the ways to civilise the natives.
