Napoleon was born on August 15, 1769 in Ajaccio, Corsica, to the lawyer and political opportunist Carlo Bonaparte and his wife Marie Letizia. Buonaparte was a wealthy family of Corsican nobility, but Napoleon's relatives were poor compared to the great French nobility.

During this period, France was divided into 102 states, each of which was appointed as a mayor.
