Aside from the size and the number of sails the lower ship also utilizes triangular lateen sails, which allow for better manuverability and can sail against wind better than square sails. They allowed Europeans to reach new lands they wouldn’t be able to with earlier ships. They sought India but found something they would later call America, which changed a backwater sub-continent into a breeding pot of superpowers
