Nicolas Copernicus (1473 - 1543)

Copernicus was the first important scientists of the European Renaissance. He is considered to be the founder of modern astronomy.

He was born in Poland and was a son of a trader. He studied mathematics, astronomy and medicine. His great work on astronomy was know as " On the Revolutions the Heavenly spheres". It is believed that the earth was the center of the universe and all heavenly bodies such as the sun, moon and the stars revolved around it.

This theory was favoured by the Catholic Church and nobody could challenge it. But Copernicus was the first Scientists who proved in his aforementioned book that the sun and not the earth is the center of the universe.

The church condemned his theory but ultimately it was approved by the Pope.
