Control of North Africa opened up the option of attacking Italy and Greece. This would divert Axis manpower and resources from Western Europe, making an invasion there much less difficult.

Explanation:

There are a number of specific answers to this question, the first being it tied up a major portion of the British army not affected during the Fall of France in 1940.

The second, and though the British people will not like my answer here, Montgomery wasn’t really that good of a leader, and if not for quite a few outstanding officers being in his command, quite possibly he would have been replaced prior to El Al Amein where the well supplied British finally overcame Rommel whose forces were woefully under-supplied.

The third reason, of course was keeping the Suez Canal open for being able to make the trip by sea through this part of the world kept shipping from coming into an almost daily potential for attack by German u-boats.

The fourth reason, and this made possibly the most impact upon the war, the fact that American long range bombers could attack Polesti, the German refinery of both synthetic fuels and regular fuels needed by the German war machine. The fifth reason, being able to keep the supply of war materials through what we know today as Iran into the underbelly of Russia and helping the Russian’s be able to continue their resistance against the Germans. There were two pieces of American equipment the Russian’s enjoyed using that we sent them, one was the P-39-Aircobra, a mid-engine airplane that had a 37mm cannon in the nose and was used very productively against German tanks. There was also quite a few P-47s sent there as well, and this they enjoyed using against German entrenchments. Other equipment was our M4 Bradley tanks, on the western front referred to as purple heart boxes, what they were referred to in Russia, one can only imagine….
