Blue Star was an Indian military operation which took place between 3rd June and 8th June, 1984 to establish control over the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple of Amritsar, Punjab) complex. The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ordered the Indian Army to start the operation. Army General Kuldip Singh Brar, brough infantry, artillery and tanks into the Harmandir Sahib to stop the Dharam Yudh Morcha led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Jarnail Singh had earlier taken residence in Harmandir Sahib and made it his headquarters in April, 1980. Fierce fighting resulted between the Sikhs and the army with heavy casualties on both sides.
"The Emergency" in India was in effect from 25th June, 1975 till 21st March, 1977. It was a 21-month period state of emergency declared by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi all across India. It was officially issued under Article 352(1) of the Constitution for "internal disturbance". Elections were suspended and civil liberties were restricted during that period.
