The literary meaning of "pagal panthis" is "followers of the mad path". Pagal panthis were a socio-religious order that emerged in the late 18th century CE in the Mymensingh region of Bengal, which is now located in Bangladesh. This order was founded by Karam Shah. The followers of this order were a syncretic mixture of Hinduism, Animism and Sufism. His son Tipu Shah led these people to fought for upholding the rights and religious principles of peasants, who didn't own any land. They were against the oppressive taxes and laws imposed by the Zamindars and the British officer. It fought against the systems of British Raj and Zamindari systems of the British government.
