According to Planck's quantum theory, ... The smallest amount of energy that can be emitted or absorbed in the form of electromagnetic radiation is known as quantum. The energy of the radiation absorbed or emitted is directly proportional to the frequency of the radiation.

Planck' Quantum Theory -

(i) According to Planck's Quantum theory energy emitted or absorbed is not continuous but it is discontinuous in the form of small discrete packets.

(ii) These package in general are called Quantum.

(iii) In case of light packets are called photons.

(iv) According to Planck energy of photon is directly proportional to its frequency or inversely proportional to its wavelength.

E \: photon \: ∝ \: v \:  ∝  \:  \frac{1}{λ}

Standard Unit - Joule(J)

E = hv \:  = \frac{he}{λ }  \:   \\  \:E \: of \: one \: photon

E \: photon \:  =  \: nhv \: \:  =  \frac{nhc}{λ}  =  \: total \: E

Where

n = no.of photons

h = Planck'Constant

C = speed of light
