Dr. B R Ambedkar demanded reserved seats in educational institutions and separate electorates for Dalits.

This made Gandhiji fast unto death because he believed that this can break the unity among Indians.

Gandhiji called the dalits as harijans [children of God].

So he agreed to give reserved seats and constituencies.

Ambedkar agreed this and they signed a pact between them which came to be known as the POONA PACT.
