Portia intended to go to Venice. She left her home by the excuse that she is going on a hermitage with Nerissa to pray for the success of their husbands. She asks Lorenzo and Jessica to look after her house in their absence. Portia had a plan to save Antonio.

She wants Nerissa to accompany her as a lawyer's clerk. They both(Portia and Nerissa) will be disguised as youngmen so that no one could recognize them in Venice.
