Ancient Spartans lived a militaristic life. Children were taken from their families at the age of 7 and spend all their life training in the military. The human body was considered a temple and discipline was the main virtue of these great warriors. That is why obese people were made fun of. Not because of how they looked, but rather because they were considered weak minded since they couldn’t control themselves. Music and math was also taught along with fighting, stealing and other necessary skills for that harsh period. They were always ready for a fight and a glorious death in the battlefield. Which was considered a great honor. So, one can say they were looking for excellence through military training.
