What was rowlatt act? Explain the reactions of the people against this act.

Rowlatt Act was an oppressive act
introduced by the British Government in 1919. It gave the Government enormous
powers to repress political activities and allowed detention of political
prisoners without trial for two years. It was also known as Black Act.
The Indians showed disapproval towards this
Act :-
1.Gandhiji called for a country wide ‘Hartal’
on 6th April, 1919. But he was arrested.
2.There were disturbances in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Punjab. In Amritsar, two
popular leaders, Dr. Satyapal and Dr. Saifud-din-Kitchlew were arrested. The
people took out a procession in Amritsar to protest against these arrests, and
demanded the release of their leaders.
3. A public meeting was announced for the
13th April. 19191, Amritsar against the arrest of their leaders.
4. People gathered there without arms and
then General Dyer marched there and killed more than 1,000 people.
