•the rowlatt act was passed on 1919 by the british government despite the united opposition of the indian members.

•It gave the government enormous powers to repress to repress political activities , and allowed detention of political prisioners without trial for 2 years.

Indian people reacted to it stoutly:

•qMahatma Gandhi wanted non-violent civil disobedience against such unjust laws.

•oIt started with a hartal on 6th april.

•oRallies were organised in various cities, workers went on strike in railway workshops, and shops closed down.

The British administration decided to clamp down on nationalists:

•Local leaders were picked up from Amritsar.

•Mahatma Gandhi was barred from entering Delhi

•On 10th April, the police in Amritsar fired upon a peaceful procession.

•On 13th April, the Jallianwala Bagh incident took place.
