A two-day strike at the giant Lenin Shipyard here collapsed today after workers were placed under military discipline, but fresh protests against the dissolution of their independent Solidarity trade union were reported from other parts of the country.

In the southern town of Nowa Huta, a protest march by several thousand steel workers was dispersed by riot police using water cannons, tear gas and percussion bombs. And in the southwestern city of Wroclaw, police moved in to break up crowds of several hundred Solidarity supporters demonstrating outside the union's former headquarters.

The street demonstrations coincided with the start of the 11th month of martial law and it seemed unlikely that they would be sustained. The consensus among informed observers here is that for the time being the military authorities have gained the upper hand after three consecutive days of strikes and street disturbances.
