(Do not write the answer in points. Write it in a paragraph form. The points are for easy understanding and memorisation.)

Bassanio had already spoken to Shylock about the loan. However, when Antonio asks for the money, Shylock does not readily agree to lend it.

1. Instead, he touches upon how Antonio does not charge any interest for any money that he lends to people.

2. Shylock also narrates the story of Jacob and the sheep and tries to convince Antonio that charging interest is not a bad thing. Antonio remains unconvinced.

3. Antonio calls Shylock a devil for citing ‘Scripture for his own purpose’ and gets impatient about the loan. This prompts Shylock to remind him of the numerous times that Antonio has insulted him in public. Antonio does not deny calling Shylock a ‘dog’ or even spitting on him. Instead, he says that he would most probably do it again and so Shylock should treat him like an enemy.

4. Shylock however says that he is willing to let go of the past and make him a friendly deal. The penalty of the money not being returned in time would be a pound of flesh from Antonio’s body. Antonio accepts the deal, while Bassanio is hesitant. However, Shylock reminds him that a pound of human flesh is of no use to him and hence it is a rather harmless deal.

They decide to go ahead with the signing of the pact and eventually Shylock lends them the money.
