The European revolution of 1848, known in some countries as the Spring of Nations,Springtime of the People or the Year of Revolution, were a series of political upheavals throughout Europe in 1848.It was the only Europe-wide collapse of traditional authority to date, but within a year, reactionary forces had won out and the revolutions collapsed.
This revolutionary wave began in France in February and immediately spread to most of Europe and parts of Latin America.Over 50 countries were affected, but with no co-ordination or co-operation among the revolutionaries in different countries.Five factors were involved: the widespread dissatisfaction with the political leadership; the demand for more participation and democracy; the demands of the working classes; the upsurge of nationalism and finally the regrouping of the reactionary forces based in the royalty, the aristocracy, the army and the peasants.

With many revolts like revolts of the poor, unemployed workers and starving peasants during 1848 in Europe, educated middle class of France also started a revolution for the abdication of the monarch and a republic based on universal male suffrage had been proclaimed.

In other parts of Europe, men and women of the liberal middle classes combined their demands for constitution with national unification. They took advantage of the growing popular unrest to push their demands for the creation of a nation-state on parliamentary principles - a constitution, freedom of press and freedom of association. The issue of extending political rights to women was most controversial subject matter within the liberal movement in which large number of women had participated actively.
