Forestry, protection of forest environment and ecology were taught at the Imperial Forest Research Institute. Until 1885, selected candidates were trained at France and Germany. Then, the training was moved to London. From 1926, all candidates were trained at the newly established, Forest Research Institute at Dehradun.

The Imperial Forest Department in India was established by the British in 1864, when Dietrich Brandis who was a German Forest Officer, was appointed the Inspector General of Forests.
