Answer:

As Franz went to school that day there were many temptations enticing him not to go to school that day. The first temptation was his lack of preparation for the test on participles. Apart from it, there were other temptations. It was very warm and bright. The birds were chirping at the edge of the woods; and in the open field back of the sawmill the Prussian soldiers were drilling. It was all much more tempting than the rule for participles, but he had the strength to resist, and hurried off to school.

Answer:

Franz hated attending the French lessons in school. His hatred for French-led him to dislike the French professor Mr Hamel, who always asked him questions, whose answers he never knew. This was humiliating for him. That day, especially, he was tempted to stay away from school and enjoy the bright day and listen to the chirping of the birds outside. The Prussian soldiers were drilling, and he wanted to go outside and see that.
