The third estate had demanded a one person one vote system but the king rejected it stating he would continue the system of one estate one vote. Angered by this, the estate walked out of the assembly in protest and gathered in the tennis court to take an oath that they will form a national assembly and end the rule of the monarch in France.

On June 20, 1789, the members of the French third estate took the tennis court oath, voving 'not to separate and to reassemble wherever circumstances require, until the constitution of the kingdom is established' it was not the pivotal event in the French revolution.
