Ashvamedha yajna was a yajna performed by the Kings of the Vedic period. In this yajna, a horse was made to run across some parts of other states accompanied by a group of soldiers for a period of one year. The area covered by the horse during this time, used to be included in the king's sovereign state. If any other king was found to capture or kill the horse, then it meant that he has challenged the king's ( whose horse was made to run ) army and had to fight with the accompanying soldiers. If the horse returned without any dispute then king's sovereign was accepted and the horse was made to sacrifice at the end of the yajna.
