The main intension of French government about educating Vietnamese was to modernise them with their culture and tradition in order to have more control over Vietnamese
But these had a bad impact on Vietnamese and created nationalism in them due to the partiality made by French colonies. However, there was division of opinion.
One group of people emphasised the need to use the French language as the medium of instruction. They thought by learning the French, the Vietnamese would be introduced to the culture and civilisation of French. This would help create an Asiatic French solidly tied to European French'. The educated people in Vietnam would respect French sentiments and ideals, other group was opposed to French being the only medium of instruction. They suggested that Vietnamese be taught in lower classes and French in the higher classes.
