This division was based on the idea that the religion of rulers was the only important historical change, and that there were no other significant developments—in the economy, society or culture. Few historians follow this periodisation today.

It was a religious game played by the Britishers using the 'Divide and rule' tactics.

The Britishers infused communal biases and hostile feelings in the minds of Indians. The Muslims and Hindus, who had been living together for years, turned suspicious against each other.

These problems spread like a forest fire. The Britishers acclaimed the Hindus that since they were in a majority, they will make a Hindu rashtra (Hindu nation) and will pay no heed to the needs of Muslims. It was a distorted thing since India was to be a secular nation. Many more factors raises the tension between the two communities, when at last the Muslims began demanding a new nation for themselves to protect their rights and culture. Mohammad Ali Jinnah presented a two nation theory, which gave a model of Pakistan.

This way, subsequently India moved towards partition.

The British historians don't believe it was their fault. They held up the idea of increasing communal riots and tensions between the two communities to be the reason for partition.
