These groups were called varnas . According to the priests , each varna had a different set of functions and these groups were decided on the basis of birth. Many people did not accept the system of varna laid down by the brahmins . So people oppose the system of varnas.

The Varna system in Dharma-shastras divides society into four varnas (Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishya and Shudras). Those who fall out of this system because of their grievous sins are ostracised as outcastes (untouchables) and considered outside the varna system.
