It is why Margot is so fragile. She has a memory of the sun because she is older and the other kids don't because they have always lived in constant rain. It is what causes all of the conflice in the story. The other children lock Margot in the closet and force her to miss the 1 hour of sun.

The children had a rude attitude towards Margot . The main reason was that she remembered the appearance of sun as she had lived in Ohio when she was 4 years old but the other children had seen the sun last when they were 2 years old and could not remembered how the sun looked . Thus the children got angry whenever she used to describe the sun and they all locked her in the far away closet.
