He was playing with the ball. Then he lost it and began to learn what it feels like when you lose something you posessed.

In the beginning of the ball poem the poet sees the boy, standing still with desperate eyes.

He had lost his ball. Losing a ball may seem to be an insignificant event but for the boy it wasn't. For him it was the first time when he lost his beloved possession. He had the ball for a long time. As he lost it, he felt that along with it he has also lost his childhood memories.

He saw his ball merrily bouncing and going inside the harbour. But he could do nothing. He stood rigid, stumbling and looking into the harbour.
