Answer:

Matilda lost the necklace she had borrowed from Mme. Forestier and they have to replace it with a new one. This drives all their money. They have to leave their previous house and they start living in a small rented attic. Matilda irresponsibly lost the necklace. She could have adorned those flowers, her husband suggested. But she stuck to her demand for a necklace only. She could have been satisfied with whatever she had, but she always desired materialistic happiness and always remained discontent. She was an impractical woman. She was not courageous enough to confess to Mme. Forestier that she lost her jewel. Her irresponsible, impractical, materialistic, demanding and cowardly nature was the main reason for her ruin.
