The First War of Independence brought about these changes in the army basically to prevent them for taking up arms :

The ratio of the Europeans in the army was increased . This was done so that the Indian army cannot take up arms against them . The earlier ratio was about 1 : 1000 or around that figure . But the ratio was suddenly and greatly increased to 1 : 2 or 2 : 5 and hence the Indian soldiers could not rise in rebellion against the British .

The British troops were kept in important locations in maps . These places generally included strategic locations where there is a high chance of attack from other kingdoms . The British were kept in forts so that they were secure enough .

The British discriminated the soldiers on the basis of religion and caste . They followed the Policy of "Divide and Rule" in order to easily administer the land and prevent feelings of nationalism .

Newspapers and other journals were prevented to reach them so that feelings of nationalism and love for one's country is not born in them .

Their salaries were reduced and hence it became difficult for the soldiers to maintain their families .
