Although the French Revolution failed, it did not fail entirely; some things changed in France, and it never was precisely the way it had been before 1789.

Before the Revolution, the rights and privileges of the Nobility and the Church had been overwhelming and unchallenged. The legislature had consisted of three “estates”:

First Estate — the Nobility

Second Estate — the Church (Roman Catholic officials, of course)

Third Estate — the represenatives of everyone else, that is, the “people”

So… in this system, over 99% of the people were represented by only 1/3 of the legislature!

And it gets worse. This set-up… with a powerful King, of course, at the top… exempted the nobility and the Church from ever paying anything in taxes. So the middle class had the least power but had to pay for everything. The poor, meanwhile, were hardly represented at all.

Even though the French Republic failed and even though France went through a series of different constitutions, it was never again so overwhelmingly unfair and unrepresentative of its growing middle class.

For example, Napoleon I, even though he became a dictator, tried to be a benevolent one, a “child of the French Revolution.” He wasn’t so big on democracy, of course, but was mostly a supporter of the other Rights of Man.
