Philip Sletherby is portrayed as a person who made a careful analysis of people before he helped people out, especially when it an instance such as lending money. He does not blindly believe people going by what they say. This can be seen from how he observed the only other person with him in the carriage during a train journey.

His co-traveller who told Philip that he was travelling to the same place as the latter said that he had forgotten his crest with some currency in it. When this passenger asked Philip if he could lend him some money that he would return later when they met at the Brill Manor, Philip agreed after some hesitation. However, the man gave a different description of the missing crest in contrast to what Philip said that his mother had written to Philip about. Similarly, when Philip asked the man if his mother whom he was supposed to meet resembled him, he replied in the affirmative. Philip told him that he was asking this because he had so far only communicated with the person he was going to stay through letters and had not met her in person.

Later, when the man got down at his station and asked for the money, Philip refused to part with it. He said that the discrepancy regarded the crest had caused him to doubt the authenticity of his co-passenger. His suspicions were confirmed when the man described his mother. Philips had actually met the lady the previous week over lunch and she resembled him in no way.
