In 1922, when the Non-Cooperation Movement was in full swing, a violent incident forced Gandhiji to call off the movement. The movement turned violent at Chauri Chuara, a small town in Uttar Pradesh, when the policemen beat up local leader who was peacefully leading the protesters. The police fired at the protesters and they set the police station on fire. 22 policemen were burnt alive.
