it is explained in which act scene
in act 1 scene 1 bassanio tells his feelings about portia to antonio, his best friend. in act 1 scene 3 the bond is made that bassanio will pay the money and antonio is the guarantee or else shylock will take 1 pound of flesh from antonio's body from wherever he wanted. shylock at that time said that the bond is just for a joke he doesn't mean the bond but afterwards he took his revenge by saying that the bond is a real one and antonio had to do what the bond said.

Bassanio wanted to marry portia a rich heiress but due to lack of money couldnt present himself as an elligible suitor for he didn't have money, so he asked antonio for a loan but as all of antonio's money was invested on that year's trade he couldn't help bassanio.Antonio being a good friend wanted to help Bassanio so he went to Shylok to borrow money where he had to sign that bond
