Thank you for the question. Please find the answer below:

In ancient India, the properties of the soil were not known to the people due to lack of scientific knowledge and technology. The chemical properties of the soil were unknown but the people classified the soil on the basis of fertility and nature of terrain.

The soil was classified as under;

(i) Urvara Lands (Fertile soil)

(ii) Khila lands (Barren soil)

(iii) Sakrawati (Sandy soil)

(iv) Saadvala (Grasslands)

(v) Nadimaatraka (Lands irrigated by rivers)

(vi) Aranya (Forest soils)
