The period after ww2 till cloapse of USSR is known as cold war

It is called the cold war as the 2 super powers (USA and USSR) never got into direct fighting but enourged small wars around the globe eg- Korean war (which split north and south Korea along 38th parallel), Vietnam war (but south Vietnam fell when Richard Nixon withdrew American support form south Vietnam)
