Both Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and William Carrey played a major role, along with great people like Ram Mohan Roy, Shashi Bhushan Chatterjee etc. in starting modern schools and colleges in Bengal.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar (1820 – 1891) was a Bengali academic, writer, entrepreneur, reformer and philanthropist. He was a prominent figure of Bengali Renaissance,  

William Carrey (1761 – 1834) was a Christian missionary, social reformer and cultural anthropologist, who spent a major part of his life in Bengal and worked to put an end to the practise of ‘Sati’.
