Answer: I really don't know if it is a good idea to select an engagement ring that fast.

There used to be a lot of jewellers near the Grand' Place, now there are only 2 or 3 remaining although there is an Indian diamond shop in the GP itself (Gautam - they also have 2 branches at the airport, one of which you will probably go past on the way to baggage reclaim).

In my opinion, the best jewellers in Brussels is Holeman which is next to Cartier at Place Louise - so not in the GP area but the swanky "haut de la ville". It's near the Hilton Hotel, which is also, in the other direction, near La Maison du Diamant at Porte de Namur. If you had time, you could visit Louis David in rue des Tongres; unlike 2 other jewellers in that steet, he does not have a shopfront so you have to ring the bell and go upstairs, but he is the retail outlet of a workshop in Antwerp. Usually the reason for going to Antwerp is to pick the stone (especially if what you want is an investment diamond) and the setting and have the two put together, but I don't know that you would have time.

If you want to stay near Mérode the best hotel in the area is the Montgomery, one stop away on the metro, otherwise there are a Best Western (Park Hotel) and the Derby Hotel nearby (check these out in the hotels section) or you might find it convenient to stay around Schuman, especially if coming in on the airport bus.

Finally, I would also recommend you look in the antique jewellery shops in the Galeries St. Hubert.
