The concept of Community government is important for multicultural societies such as Belgium where people of numerous cultural and ethnic backgrounds are living together.

In order to promote cultural harmony an equal representation of various communities is ensured so everyone is able to live together amicably. This setup is called as Community Government. In this type of government, no single community can take decisions on the behalf of all others.

In Belgium, Community Government exists with the representation from French, German and Dutch speaking population and deals with cultural, educational and linguistic issues.
