Nationalism is one of the most powerful forces in the modem world. As an ideology and movement, it exerted a strong influence in the American and French Revolutions. The Indian nationalism emerged under conditions of political subjugation of the Indian people by the British. The structure of economic relations between England and India involving agriculture, industry, trade and finance only developed India’s colonial dependence, this resulted in the growth of new social classes and groups. The most important role in the rise of nationalism was played by the modem Indian intelligentsia. Though, initially, it was felt that the British rule was a modernizing process. But the Indian intelligentsia soon realized that it was a colonization, pure and simple. This made them to set out nationalist and political movements against the British rule.
Nationalism became sentiment to the Indian leaders who spearheaded the freedom movement and succeeded in spreading this ideology in the nook and comer of the country to make each Province, State, Town and Village embrace the idea of nationalism and promote patriotism among all the people to struggle for their liberation from the alien rule. It became the soaring spirit that knitted together all persons with unity of language, religion, race and customs and further strengthened itself by a common political and economic interest with unity in diversity.
