Over one million Indian troops served overseas, of whom 62,000 died and another 67,000 were wounded. In total at least 74,187 Indian soldiers died during the war. In World War I the Indian Army fought against the German Empire in German East Africa and on the Western Front.
First of all the war created a new economic and political situation.

expenditure which was financed by war loans and increasing taxes;
custom duties were raised and income tax introduced.
(iii) Through the war years prices increased-doubled between 1913 and 1918-leading to extreme hardship for the common people.
(iv) Villages were called upon to supply soldiers, and forced recruitment in rural areas caused widespread anger.
(v) Then in 1918-19 and 1920-21, crops
failed in many parts of India, resulting in acute shortage of food. This
was accompanied by an influenza epidemic.

(iii) On the other hand business groups reaped fabulous profits from the war. The war created a demand for industrial goods like jute bags, cloth, rails, and caused a decline of imports from other countries into India. As a result Indian industries expanded during the war.
