Explanation:

Dalit is mostly used to describe communities that have been subjected to untouchability. Such people were excluded from the four-fold varna system of Hinduism and thought of themselves as forming a fifth varna, describing themselves as Panchama.

Answer:

The issue of untouchability assumed a truly national dimension after Gandhi offered unqualified support to the Vykom Satyagraha launched by some local leaders of Travancore in modern day Kerala, who were trying to remove the ban on the entry of untouchables on the roads surrounding the Vykom temples. Through Young India, Gandhi informed the country about the sufferings of the satyagrahis and, soon after that, the cause was taken up by the national press.

In March 1925, he went personally to Vykom, addressed public meetings and held discussions with the leaders of the orthodox section who were opposing the campaign. The satyagraha bore fruit and, in January 1926, the Travancore government announced the opening of the public roads around the temples to the untouchables. Through the press, Gandhi appealed to the Travancore government to go the full logical extent and insist on throwing open all public institutions, including temples, to the untouchables on the same terms as the rest of the population
