Just because it was in the previous millennium doesn't mean the caste system and discrimination existed in the form we know it today. In ancient times a cast was determined as per the vedic tradition of the Thinai system as called in South India that is one is tearmed into a class according to his occupation. Though everything went as per the norms of that time the Chola Empire was also known to People's welfare.
