The condition of the writer in Luncheon was pathetic. He became penniless for the month after treating his friend to a luncheon.

EXPLANATION:

The Luncheon is a humorous and ironic story by the famous writer William Somerset Maugham. In this story the writer narrates how he was reduced to penury after having treated an acquaintance- a lady who claimed to be his friend in a classy restaurant in Paris.

The author was not that famous in those days and could hardly make both ends meet. Suddenly this lady asks him for a meeting at the expensive restaurant. She orders the most exquisite delicacies swiping away all his money, the expenses he had saved for the month. The poor writer has to satisfy his hunger with just a miserable mutton chop whilst the lady ravishes her appetite with the choicest food. At the end the writer has hardly any money to last him for the month.
