The conditions of a widow before the reform movements were very pitiable and pathetic.
EXPLANATION:
- Before the reform movements, the widows were in extremely pitiable conditions in the country because they were socially and economically exploited.
- It should also be noted that child marriage was prevalent in India during that time and young girls were married to men much older than their age. Now, if their husbands died his wife who is barely an adolescent has to undergo a torturous process of becoming a widow.
- They were not allowed to get remarried, their long hair was shaved off, they were only permitted to wear white coarse garments, they were kept in secluded places because the sight of a widow was considered as inauspicious, they were not given any property of their fathers or husbands, they were even not allowed to eat certain things.
- But, many reformers like Rajaram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra, etc worked extensively to eradicate such evil practices towards widows and they supported the education and remarriage of young widows.
