In the early Vedic period women enjoyed an important position in society . Monogamy was the usual practice. They were given opportunities for education. Women scholars are believed to have composed some of the rig Vedic hymns. No religious ceremonies could be performed unless the wives were present. Women could choose their husbands in a ceremony called swayamvara. The widows were allowed to remarry.
But in the later Vedic period the position of women was declined. They no longer took part in assemblies . Now their highest duty was to serve their husband and his family .They still took part in religious ceremonies.
